FPL GW23 Tips: Transfers, Best Picks & Team Selection

fpl gw23 tips

After a long break, a busy schedule in Fantasy Premier League is back with Gameweek 23. Let’s jump to our FPL GW23 Tips with the best picks, fixtures, transfer targets, odds, captain picks, and team selection.

1. Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 23 Tips

  • Start preparing for Double Gameweek 25 (Manchester City and Brentford will play twice), blank gameweek 26 (Liverpool, Luton, Chelsea, Spurs have postponed fixtures) and blank Gameweek 29  (see more in our FPL calendar)
  • Hold your transfer until Friday – if there is som news on double gameweek fixtures, you do not want to make an early transfer
  • So far, Tottenham, Fulham, Burnley, and Brentford all will have a fixture in blank GW29 (more teams will join them after FA Cup 5th round)
  • Blank in GW29 will be determined after GW26 where the FA Cup 5th round is scheduled to.
  • Brentford has the most games in the following rounds from all teams: double in GW25, and fixtures in blank gameweeks 26, 29
  • If you have two free transfers, try to use one to bring Haaland back, and save the other to GW24

How underrated patience is in FPL & the shiny object syndrome

I guess a lot of you owned Pickford or Schar this season and missed all their hauls. It only shows how unpredictable FPL is.

There are managers that owned Pickford at the start of the season, transferred him out for Areola (but missed Areola hauls from the start of the season), then transferred Areola out for Dubravka (and missed other Areola hauls). Some FPL managers are so impatient with their picks that they sabotage their FPL output by chasing the “new” shiny object (but only after this “new shiny object” scored a lot of FPL points).

The problem is, that they buy this new player too late, so they never own the right players at the right time, but only the right players at the wrong time.

And as a result, they keep missing out on all these hauls.

So, be more patient and trust your FPL picks more.

2. FPL Gameweek 23 Transfer Tips and Key Players to pick

Key players to pick

  • Palmer – good stats, fixtures, on penalties
  • Jota
  • Saka
  • Gabriel/Saliba/Raya –  have at least one Arsenal defensive player
  • Pedro Porro – attacking threat

Transfer targets

  • Haaland – your number one transfer target
  • De Bruyne
  • Toney – 2G + 1A in just 2 games since he is back
  • Kudus
  • Gordon – for Newcastle’s good fixture run
  • Trippier
  • Walker

3. Fixtures to target in FPL GW23

In which fixtures we could expect a lot of fantasy points? These are the fixtures to target in Gameweek 22 according to bookies odds.

  • Brentford vs. Manchester City: Citizens 69 % to win, 39 % to score 2.5+ goal
  • Newcastle vs. Luton: Newcastle 68 % to win, 40 % to score 2.5+ goal
  • Sheffield vs. Aston Villa: Aston Villa 61 % to win, 33 % to score 2.5+ goal
  • Brighton vs. Crystal Palace: Brighton 60 % to win, 31 % to score 2.5+ goals

4. Updated watchlists: Best players to pick in Gameweek 23 and beyond

We also looked at players from each position: goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards and updated our watchlists.

We examine which players are best picks in each price bracket: budget enablers, midpriced picks, and premium options. Check our watchlists with our ratings and comments here:

5. Best captain pick in Gameweek 23

Our captaincy index gave as some crazy captaincy ideas for this gameweek, unfortunately, the majority of FPL managers do not own these assets so they are really differential captaincy options.

According to our captaincy index, Rashford is (surprisingly) the best captain in FPL Gameweek 23 with a captaincy index score of 1.5.

Fernandes (captaincy index score 1.44) is the number 2 captaincy pick and Sterling (1.34) is number 3.

But you cannot for wrong with Haaland captain as he is back. If you are looking for other options, consider Trippier, Gordon or Watkins.

6. What bookies odds say about Gameweek 23

As usual, we converted bookies odds into probabilities using our Odds to probability calculator, to assess the potential of gameweek 23.

Clean sheet odds for GW23

Manchester City (42 %) is the most likely team to keep a clean sheet in GW23. Bookies also favor Newcastle (40 %) and Brighton (37 %) to potentially keep a clean sheet in GW23. But Brighton has only 2 clean sheets this season and conceded 4 goals against Luton, so we are quite skeptical about bookies odds regarding this one.

Bookies expect 4.67 clean sheets in gameweek 23 in the last season, we were used to a rate of 5.45 per clean sheets gameweek. This season we have seen clean sheets at the rate of 4.38 clean sheets per gameweek.

Expected clean sheets

Due to correction in the number of clean sheets: Everton, Fulham

Everton overperformed their defensive expectations the most of all teams. They should have kept 4.89 clean sheets instead of 8 according to our expected clean sheets table.

Due to an improvement in the number of clean sheets: Brighton, Man. City

Brighton underperformed their defensive expectations the most from all teams. They should have kept 5.53 clean sheets instead of 2 according to our expected clean sheets table.
